The missing legacy of Marie Neurath

Isotype is usually told as Otto Neurath’s story. Marie Neurath was the “transformer” who turned data into the pictures, ran the Isotype Institute for decades after Otto died, and made the children’s books that brought the method to a generation of readers. This essay makes the case for recognising her as a data visualization pioneer in her own right.
