Streets to Stability: making San Francisco's homelessness system visible

San Francisco has 8,300 unhoused people and no clear account of what it all costs. Crankstart, a family foundation, asked us to make a plan that a policymaker could not only see, but feel compelled to act on. The centerpiece is a diagram that shows the complexity of the situation: three stages of homelessness, nine city agencies, and a ring of all 232 service providers in between. Hover over any part of the chart to see who funds whom. The project resulted in a book of policy recommendations outlining twelve significant steps to make homelessness rare, brief and one-time. It launched at an event with Mayor Daniel Lurie in April 2025.
