“All data visualization is a dialogue” — an interview with Observable

Allison Horst at Observable asked me to explain how we work, so I shared some ideas on how our process creates more equitable communication. I outlined the four-phase collaborative process we use on every project, from the first sketch with a client to the final product that ships. We also discussed the 2022 Data Vandals gun-violence installation (The Murder Game) and Streets to Stability, where the conversation was with a whole city government. In each, the chart isn’t the final word; it’s the opening step in a conversation.
