Hands-on dataviz workshops at ArtCenter

ArtCenter College of Design invited us out for a week-long workshop with students who had never been asked to make a chart with a paintbrush. By the end of the sessions, there was a wall of large, interactive data posters about nature and campus culture, asking questions like “How do you feel when you see a coyote?”, “Do you think AI is a threat to human creativity?” and “Have you been in a car accident?”, plus a triangle trifecta of I’m Hungry / I’m Sleepy As Hell / I’m Freezing Cold. The posters stayed up in the cafeteria for weeks afterwards, collecting student votes.
That same week, Maggie Hendrie, dean of the Division of Media and Technology, hosted us on the “Data to Discovery” panel, which is where the idea for LA on the Move started to take shape.
